In my opinion, changing the oil every 300kms ( 4 full days of non-competition riding ) is fine. Then every third oil change change the 2 filters and clean the 2 screens. I then do my valves every 4 months or so.
Read the manual and buy exactly what it specifies (period). I have a KTM 450 Exc and read up on this same issue. For mine it is the Motorex 20w50 since i live in so cal. Although manufacturers may have the same viscosity (ex 10w40), there are additives like graphite that are added for optimal engine wear based on your engi
For both bikes, oil changes every 3-4 hrs, trans oil changes every 8 hrs max, oil filter every 15 hrs, clean the airfilter after ever ride, check valves every now and then, replace piston/rings every 30 or so hrs for performance but for safety every 70-80 hrs (some people go more) Cost: for oil changes, the Shell Rotella T 15w40 is cheap and

Change the oil every 10hrs, filters and valve clearances every 20 and air filter when ever dirty. I did that exact maintainance on the 400, so im not complaining. Link to comment

700 hours at 25-hour intervals is 28 oil changes, or 56 qts. 90 - 56 = 34 quarts = 8.5 gallons of oil. call it $20/gallon (Rotella T6, $21-ish if you catch it on sale at walmart, usually $25-28/gal), that's $170 worth of oil that you really didn't need to change.

Hello all, I have a KTM 450 Exc 2012. The manual states it requires Motorex 10 50 w fully synthetic motor oil. I changed the oil and poured in Motorex 10 50 w fully synthetic "Power" and after realised I should have used "Cross Power".

an oil change can be as cheap as $8, if you get the oil on sale and not changing the filter, up to a 100 dollars if a dealer is doing it with the full treatment. What ever motor Im dealing with, I generally monitor closely when its new and establish its own change interval later.
THIS IS NOT A TUTORIALKTM EXC 450 Supermoto oil change! I'm sorry for the small error in editing, that is, I forgot to put the audio of the bike! I hope you
We asked Honda and they said that the CRF450L has an oil change interval of 600 miles and a valve check interval of 1,800 miles. While that seems short when viewed as a street bike, when thinking about trail bikes or dirt-bike-based dual-sports, that’s changing the oil after six 100-mile rides, which is well within reason.
And we learned during our own testing that it goes on and comes off easily, a good thing given the shorter oil-change intervals on the KTM 500 EXCs. Cycra Probend Handguards & BRP Mounts. In stock form the KTM 500 EXC comes with flimsy plastic handguards that aren’t going to protect your fingers, or levers, in a crash.

There are quite few other factors at play here as well when it comes to maintenance intervals. Cam design and how it interacts with the valve train will greatly alter valve service intervals as will material usage and density. The list goes on and on as to why the WR250r has a lower maintenance schedule.

The crankshafts with strokes of 63.4mm (450 XC-W) and 72.0mm (500 XC-W/EXC) with ultra-lightweight conrods are made by Pankl from special high-tensile strength steel. The crankshaft employs a I recently bought a 2008 KTM 450 EXC-r as I wanted something more dual sport worth. I'm liking the bike, and am now considering a multi day long dual sport ride totaling about 1300 miles. Theses LC4 motors (08 to 11), are species for oil change every 10 hours. So I would technically need a change nearly every other day . Its 80% trail 20% road bike. A versys or african twin or vstrom or some other ADV bike is perfect for what you are looking for. Those are great pavement bikes that never need maintenance. The 450 needs about 4 times as much maintenance as the 250 or any of the 650 dualsport or adventure bikes. I do not think a blanket statement like this works for everyone. But I do agree most people change their oil to often. If you took the above for a 450+ bike- then took time away for conditions (heat, dust) riding style (reving it to the moon or lugging) Did you spent the day slipping the clutch in tight single track, you can extend the interval.
Use good quality oil and change regularly, they all have a lot of shavings in the oil, its a KTM feature. I have noticed a large reduction in metal after 40hrs and with 300mi or less oil intervals the magnet becomes almost clean when checked.

I use Mobil 1 Racing 4T which is a 15w-50 and change the oil about every 250-300km's with a filter change every 2nd oil change. Have used this oil since new on the 525 (11 months old, 4,000km)
Spud786. When dealing with ktm parts, you not only have to consider (wear), but that they make stuff so light and thin, Metal fatigue is a much stronger issue than wear. But as Long as the air filtration is good, and you warm the motor of well, and change the oil as recommended, up to 500 hours is pretty safe. One of the characteristics that comes with this is decreased oil capacity. The 250L has an oil capacity of 1.8L, meanwhile the 450L, a bike with 200ccs more, has about 1.4L of oil capacity. So with a much higher output engine, that will be ridden hard, and will generate more heat, and has even less oil capacity, the oil change intervals need to .
